I do realise there’s going to be lots of wailing and moaning (it started yesterday) at MS’s decision to pull out of his F1 comback – but, as you know, I’ve never been impressed with the idea.
Firstly, as I said before, if I had been one of the Ferrari test drivers I would have been seriously browned off at MS coming back in at short notice.
One of the roles of the test driver is to step in when one of the race drivers is incapacitated, so it should have been a test driver that took over from Felipe Massa, not MS.
After his comeback was announced all sorts of hype was generated. In one report I saw, the organisers at Valencia said that the prospect of his comeback had generated an extra 10,000 ticket sales.
Ferrari would, of course, say that vindicated their decision to bring him back over one of their test drivers.
But I still don’t think it was right.
No matter.
Luca Badoer now has his race drive and I’m delighted for him. I hope he does well although he’s apparently not expected to.
